Printed an Expensive Portfolio That No Editor Ever Asked to See
A practical guide from bifajya — part of our news information portal covering real interview scenarios and honest preparation advice.
The assumption that photojournalism editors want to hold a physical book comes from an older industry model. Visiting any news information portal's submissions page today shows a different reality: online portfolios, PDF selects, and direct file transfers are standard.
What was spent and why
A premium printed portfolio through a professional lab cost €340 for 20 pages, hardcover, with archival paper. A second version was ordered after a workshop instructor suggested updating the sequence. Total spent: €620 over eight months. Number of editors who requested to see it in person: zero.
What editors actually reviewed
- A Squarespace portfolio site costing €14 per month.
- A curated PDF of 15 images sent as a WeTransfer link.
- Instagram, specifically the grid layout viewed on a phone during a brief meeting.
Printed work has genuine value for gallery submissions and awards entries, but neither of those generates reliable income early in a photojournalism career. The €620 spent on printing would have covered a 50mm f/1.8 lens, six months of website hosting, and a portable hard drive for backup storage.
Before spending on any physical presentation material, ask the specific editor you are targeting how they prefer to receive work. The answer is almost always a link.
